Argentine star Lionel Messi will not participate in Inter Miami's Leagues Cup knockout match against reigning MLS champions Columbus Crew on Tuesday, as announced by Miami's coach Gerardo Martino.
Messi is still recovering from a right ankle injury sustained during Argentina's 1-0 win over Colombia in the Copa America final last month. He has yet to resume training with his Miami teammates since being freed from a walking boot.
The Leagues Cup, featuring teams from MLS and Liga MX, saw Messi play a key role in Miami's title-winning campaign last year.
Tuesday's match between the Columbus Crew, last year's MLS champions, and Miami, the current top team in the league, is part of a series of games that will determine the quarter-final matchups on Friday and Saturday.
In Monday's round-of-16 opener, the Seattle Sounders defeated Mexican side Pumas 4-0. Paul Rothrock scored with a header from a pass by Albert Rusnak in the 32nd minute, followed by a goal from Jordan Morris in the 58th, assisted again by Rusnak. Rusnak converted a penalty in the 71st minute, and Morris added another penalty goal in stoppage time.
Seattle, which also triumphed over Pumas in the 2022 CONCACAF Champions League final, will next face the winner of Tuesday's match between San Jose and Los Angeles FC.
Other knockout matches on Tuesday feature Philadelphia at Cincinnati, Cruz Azul versus Mazatlán, Tigres against New York City, Toluca at Colorado, and Club América at St. Louis.
